Dr. Byrd, Dallas Rhinoplasty Surgeon
Dr. Steve Byrd has been a Dallas rhinoplasty surgeon for over 25 years. Like many of us, he wears many different hats in his life, and the list above highlights just a few of them. An intensely private man, he manages to navigate a high profile career and enriching personal life with ease.
Surgeon
Not only is Dr. Byrd well known in Dallas as an innovative, gifted plastic surgeon, his reputation has drawn patients from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America and Europe. His surgical skills have won him the respect of a large group of long-term patients and continue to help him attract new patients daily. His surgical abilities are just a part of that equation. Another key is his ability to continue to grow, learn, and teach in a quickly changing field. There quite simply can be no end to acquiring surgical, technical, and scientific knowledge if you intend to offer your patients the best possible surgical outcomes.
Dr. Byrd's patients know that they can rely on his surgical skills, but they also rely on his care and compassion. His innate warmth and generosity cannot be faked or learned. Being able to care about patients before and after they leave the operating room is not something that all surgeons do. In Dr. Byrd's case, he can't imagine not caring. There's no doubt that the essential warmth his patients experience is a key reason they return and recommend him to their friends and family members.
Teacher
Dr. Byrd is a full professor at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. In that capacity he has taught and mentored hundreds of plastic surgery residents. He spends time each academic year overseeing surgical cases, reviewing clinical cases, and leading classroom and symposium sessions for the current UTSW residents.
Author/Collaborator/Reviewer
As a Dallas rhinoplasty surgeon who is keenly aware that learning and educating go hand in hand, Dr. Byrd spends a good deal of time doing both. But researching and developing an innovative surgical technique doesn't serve a purpose unless the lesson is passed on to others. Writing papers is one of the ways surgeons pass along new findings, ideas and techniques. The James Barrett Brown Award is an annual award given to the best plastic surgery paper of the previous year. There are literally thousands of papers presented for publication each year, but is is a huge honor for a paper to make it past the editors and reviewers and reach publication. For a paper to be selected as the best published paper in the plastic surgery journals in the United States is a tremendous honor. Dr. Byrd is one of the very few who have won the prestigious James Barrett Brown Award.
Before and since that honor, he has worked with many other surgeons researching and collaborating on many different books, articles, and papers for numerous publications. It's difficult to put a value on the impact those many publications have had over the years, but it's safe to say that they have added significantly to the plastic surgery knowledge base.
There are many other surgeons researching and writing in order to make their contributions to the field. Dr. Byrd is routinely asked to review and evaluate these papers prior to publication. Being an evaluator/editor brings the job full circle from developing a paper to approving a paper done by someone else.
Volunteer
Many have heard the saying, "If you want to find someone to volunteer, ask someone who is already busy." Perhaps that's how Dr. Byrd became involved in some of the projects he volunteers his time and services to. He has made trips to Guatemala, Mexico, and other underserved populations as part of a LEAP (Life Enhancement Association for People) team. As part of an outstanding surgical/nursing/support team, he spends a week of non-stop surgery aiding as many families as possible. While it's difficult work, the fulfillment that comes from helping those who had no help and very little hope overcomes any fatigue.
Family Man
Dr. Byrd is a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. This father of 3 has 7 grandchildren, and whenever possible, you'll find Dr. Byrd on a boat fishing with some of his family members. Whether he's flying, boating or fishing, his family is his true source of renewal and vitality.
